Pondexter, Washington hold off Oregon State
=== Pondexter, Washington hold off Oregon State === Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Quincy Pondexter had 20 points and 10 rebounds, as No. 17 Washington got by Oregon State, 76-70, in the Pac-10 opener for both schools. Isaiah Thomas knocked down a trio of three-pointers en route to 19 points while Venoy Overton added 13 points for the Huskies (10-2, 1-0 Pac-10), who recorded their fourth consecutive victory and remained perfect at home (10-0). Roeland Schaftenaar notched 16 points and seven rebounds for the Beavers (6-6, 0-1), who saw their modest two-game win streak stopped. Calvin Haynes chipped in 15 points and Seth Tarver logged eight points, six assists and five boards in the loss. Oregon State shot a better percentage from the field (46.4 percent) than did Washington (42.4 percent) but attempted 20 free throws compared with the Huskies' 28. That proved to be the difference at the end as Pondexter sank four in a row after the Beavers cut the lead to a single possession at 71-68 with 1:27 to play. Haynes broke up the trips to the line with a bucket to keep Oregon State within striking distance. But after Pondexter's second trip to the stripe made it 75-70 with 14 ticks to go, Lathen Wallace missed a three-pointer and Darnell Gant hit 1-fo-2 at the other end to seal the win. The Huskies trailed early, 10-4, following a Schaftenaar three-ball but the hosts poured in six straight points to tie things up. However, Oregon State was firing on all cylinders from the outset and ripped off the next nine points to go in front 19-10 on a Haynes deuce. Things cooled off for the Beavers a bit from there and Washington took the lead for the first time, 22-21, more than 11 minutes in on a Thomas three- ball. Another Thomas three and a Pondexter layup to close out the half gave Washington a 10-point lead, 43-33. Washington continued to play front-runner in the second half but a pair of jumpers from Schaftenaar had the Beavers still hanging around at 51-46 with 12 1/2 minutes to go. Elston Turner hit from long distance approaching midway through the frame to hold down a 10-point advantage for the hosts and a three-point play from Thomas near the five-minute mark had the Huskies still up by nine, 67-58. Overton followed with a layup to push the lead to double digits but Oregon State rattled off six straight points starting with a Tarver three-pointer to get within 69-64 with 3:22 left. Haynes drilled a three moments later and added a free throw with 1:27 remaining to cut the lead to three, 71-68.
